Production Plant Manager - VB4 production line

PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The Production Plant Manager is responsible for overseeing the operation of a single VB4 production line dedicated to masonry and concrete products (stock bricks, maxi bricks, and blocks). The role focuses on ensuring optimal production efficiency, consistent product quality, equipment reliability, and adherence to safety and compliance standards.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Production management:
Plan, coordinate, and supervise all production activities on the SB-Plant production line.
Manage the “Dry-side” supervisor who in turn manages the brick packers.
Ensure daily, weekly, and monthly production targets are met as set out by management.
Manage changeovers and production schedules for different masonry products as directed by management.
Monitor and adjust machine settings to optimise cycle times, reduce waste, and maximise output, while maintaining quality.
Coordinate with the Mobile Plant Workshop team to ensure availability of forklifts and loaders.
Coordinate with the Raw Materials Supply Chain team to ensure raw materials availability.
B. Quality Control
Ensure all products meet company quality standards and relevant SANS requirements.
Follow company quality control procedures.
Work closely with the Quality Control team to resolve non-conformances.
Implement corrective actions where deviations are identified.
C. Equipment and Maintenance
Familiarise yourself with the VB4 manual and maintenance schedule.
Ensure routine inspections of the machine and other relevant equipment are conducted.
Coordinate planned and preventative maintenance with the Maintenance team.
Monitor quality of Maintenance team daily and report non-conformances.
Report breakdowns promptly and ensure minimal downtime.
Promote proper housekeeping and care of plant equipment.
D. Health, Safety, and Compliance
Enforce adherence to health and safety regulations (OHS Act, company safety procedures).
Maintain a safe and clean working environment.
Ensure required Safety meetings are held as required.
Follow instructions as received from the Safety, Security and Loss Control Officer.
Ensure all staff use PPE and follow safe operating procedures.
E. Team Leadership
Supervise machine operators, packers, forklift drivers, and other supporting staff.
Train and mentor employees on proper operating procedures.
Monitor performance and address misconduct or underperformance.
Conduct regular performance evaluations.
Promote teamwork, accountability, and discipline within the production team.
Coordinate with HR for training needs and requirements.
Ensure required cross training is performed to ensure succession planning.
F. Reporting & Administration
Maintain accurate production, downtime, and maintenance records.
Provide daily/weekly production reports to management.
G. Other responsibilities
Ensure proper housekeeping is maintained on the entire production line as well as buildings attached to the SB-Plant according to company standards.
Stay up to date with all company policies and procedures.
Follow instructions as received from the Yard Manager, Operations Manager and Director.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
Strong technical knowledge of VB4 (or similar) brick-making machines and/or related PLC knowledge and experience.
Hands-on problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
Previous supervisory experience.
Strong organisational and planning skills.
Leadership and people management abilities.
Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Ability to compile production reports.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of Grade 12 (Matric) –Math, Science or other technical subjects - advantageous
Minimum 5 years’ experience in concrete product manufacturing in a supervisory position.
Experience with VB4 (or similar) production line essential.
Knowledge of SANS standards and quality control processes.
Technical qualification in Mechanical/Electrical/Production Management - advantageous.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Mobility: Must be able to move around the production line, factory floor, and yard throughout the shift. This includes climbing stairs, walking on uneven ground, and standing for extended periods.
Stamina: Ability to work long shifts in a manufacturing environment, often exposed to heat, dust, and noise.
Strength: While not a labour-intensive role, the person must be able to occasionally assist with or inspect operations involving lifting or moving bricks, blocks, or equipment parts (up to approx. 25kg).
Vision & Attention to Detail: Good eyesight (with or without corrective lenses) required to monitor machine operations, identify defects, read gauges/instruments, and ensure proper stacking and quality.
Hearing: Sufficient hearing (with or without aids) to detect alarms, machine sounds, forklift movement, and verbal communication in a noisy environment.
Hand-Eye Coordination & Manual Dexterity: Must be able to operate control panels, buttons, levers, and inspection tools safely and accurately.
Environmental Tolerance: Must be comfortable working in an industrial environment with dust, vibration, cement residue, and outdoor yard conditions.
Emergency Response Capability: Physically able to act quickly in emergencies (e.g., stopping machinery, assisting in evacuation, or responding to unsafe stacking situations).
Salary based on level of experience and qualifications, reference checks will be done.
Applicants already residing in the West Rand area will get preference.
